Case Histories

The following are a collection of simple case studies  where Reiki has been used to help benefit health problems. At no stage do we  claim that Reiki is a cure all for disease. We have seen it promote the natural  healing processes of the body in hundreds of cases. We also consider it very  complementary to all other healing systems.

Classic first aid
Marilyn Ducharme

Thom Beal is a case history in and of himself. Although his wife  had been very interested in Reiki from the first time she received a treatment,  Thom remained an ardent sceptic  not sure whether he wanted to release the  money for his wife to take a Reiki 2 class. Several things happened quite close  to each other to change his mind.

First, his 3 year old son fell at church and split his lip and my  husband (Al ” then a 2nd degree), stopped the bleeding in his lip instantly and  just as dramatically calmed his hysterical son who then sat quietly while Al  reikied him. The boys lip never swelled and looked perfectly normal the next day. Then, after visiting our house to learn more about Reiki and participate in  a mini-group Reiki session, Thom slipped off of the one step of my porch as he  was leaving and twisted his ankle. I dropped to the ground and immediately  reikied his ankle, then adjourned back into our house after a few minutes (as it  was December and quite cold). We all reikied him for another 20 minutes then set  him on his way.

He called me the next evening and told me that he was proned to  spraining his ankle and that he knew that it would be about 3 weeks for his  ankle to get better. However, much to his surprise, it was 3:30 PM. before he  remembered that he was supposed to have a sprained ankle! He only felt a mild  twinge, and there was no swelling.

Finally, while he and another man were at church getting out the  Christmas decorations, a huge wooden beam fell on Thomâs head, practically knocking him unconscious. While the other man was trying to decide whether to  call an ambulance, Al and I arrived at church for choir practice. A large red  lump was beginning to form on his head, so Al and I placed our hands on his head  and reikied him using second degree skills to turbo-charge the Reiki. After  about 2 minutes, the pain had disappeared and after another 10-15 minutes, he  had no bump and you could barely see where he had been hit. The next day he  reported that there was no evidence of the incident and he had no headache.  Further, he decided that he was going to take the Reiki course and that he was  also going to take the Reiki 2 with his wife. Needless to say, Thom now has  quite a few case histories of his own to tell.

The back case history
Luann Jacobs

In 1977 I had a fall in Hong Kong which resulted in an acute  wrenching of the muscles from my neck to my coccyx. I first went to the  allopathic (western) physician who after x-rays revealed no smashed vertebra,  gave me pain killers and sent me on my way. Since I was still in extreme pain  and could not sit down (whether on pain pills or not), I next went to see a  chiropractor, who miraculously undid the spasms for a whole two days, but the  pain and spasms returned.

A few months later, while in Japan, a friend of mine recommended I try shiatsu, an accupressure technique. One tremendously painful but healing  session resulted in absolute pain free movement for approximately one year. But,  as always, the pain and spasms would eventually return, usually following some  stressful event. And I was constantly aware of a niggling pain in the right hip,  when I rolled over in bed, or got up from a chair, or did any number of normal  activities.

I also continued to try alternative remedies. I studied schiatsu  in New York for two years. I studied tai chi, chinese 5 elements, and altered my  diet, including becoming a vegetarian. I studied other Eastern philosophies,  including yoga, postural and breath work. Then about 4 years ago I had the  occasion to have major repair work on my teeth (old fillings needed replacing)  and my dentist explained to me that my jaw on the left side was out of  alignment. He augmented that side with the fillings and crown replacements  which, low and behold, cut my back pain by fifty percent. Then a wonderful thing  happened. I took a Reiki seminar one weekend, thanks to some wonderful teachers  - Esther and John - and the following week on my way to work one morning, I  suddently felt a jolt in my left arm. Well, I thought this was the big one!  (Heart attack.) But after a few minutes I felt fine, just perfect in fact, and  off to work I went. Later that morning I became aware of the fact that getting  in and out of the car there was an absence of pain in my right hip that had been  there for fifteen years. The jolt in my left arm was probably just the rush of  sensation as something in my upper back released. That pain has not  returned.

Using symbols for protection of property
Marilyn Ducharme

Recently, my twins went on their long awaited trip to Toronto,  Canada for a North American musical festival. As usual, I reminded them to put  Reiki symbols on all their luggage, their musical instruments, and their wallets  (since they each had $100 for food and entertainment).

The day after they arrived in Canada, they were performing and  were advised that they could leave their belongings in the bus because the bus  driver would stay behind. Much to their dismay, almost all of the people who had  left their wallets in the bus returned to find their money missing from their  wallets. This included people who had “hidden” their wallets in their bags. Much  to everyone’s amazement, the only wallets left unscathed were the ‘twins’. The  only thing that saved them from suspicion was the fact that they had been with  everyone else.

Naturally, everyone wondered why they were so lucky — particularly  since one of them had even been so bold as to leave her wallet in plain view on  a seat! One of the twins, who had been previously too reluctant to even use her  Reiki in public for fear of ridicule, explained that their wallets were  protected with Reiki symbols. Much to her surprise, after she explained what  Reiki was and what the symbols could do, everyone begged her to put symbols in  their wallets.

I might add that the twins reported to me that they surrounded  their band and orchestra with Reiki symbols before and during their performances  and they took first place for both band and orchestra.

Case History from John Gilmour

Reiki people around Norwich consider me as being something of a Reiki cynic. At the end of a recent BodyTalk seminar, John-V suggested that a  Reiki treatment was an ideal follow up to BodyTalk treatment and added, ‘Of  course, John-G reckons that Reiki is voodoo!’ So why am I of all people writing  this note?

Last evening I was driving in a stake to support a rose bush which  was drooping badly and blocking a pathway in the garden. Having failed to find  my mallet, I decided to use the back of a hatchet which incidentally had been  recently sharpened.

Although the implement was not ideal, it did the job and all was  well until either through lack of care or tiredness my swing was slightly off  line - like many of my golf swings - and the hatchet head hit the stake a  glancing blow and continued straight on to my right thigh. For one shocked  second I thought that it was the sharp edge which had hit my leg but fortunately  this was not the case. The force of the blow coupled with the sharp edge would  have completely severed my thigh muscles and quite possibly broken the bone too.  What a mess that would have been!

Instead, I had a numb thigh with an indentation and a small break  in the skin. Once the shock had worn off, I realized that I was going to have a  very sore leg with a whopper of a bruise, as I know how I react to even minor  knocks especially on my leg muscles!

Why not test all those stories told about how wonderful Reiki was  as first aid, thought I - nothing to lose! I put my hands on the wound for a  while and then I limped indoors to look for some sympathy. Marillyn (who is a  Reiki Master) joined with me in covering the area with our hands for about an  hour whilst we watched Wimbledon on the television. After this, the anticipated  swelling had not materialized although the thigh was still very sore. A touch of  BodyTalk was then added for good measure and I headed off to bed.

This morning - magic! No pain at all, the very faintest slightly  pink bruise the size of a 50p and absolutely no stiffness in the thigh and no  indentation. Also, a rather stiff knee which had developed after playing golf  the previous day was completely free. A lengthy walk and a session in the  swimming pool this afternoon attest to the completeness of the cure.

I write this note just 24 hours after the incident and there is  virtually no sign of the wound at all. The actual area is slightly tender when  pressed but otherwise what would undoubtedly have been a very nasty bruise and a  very stiff painful thigh was absolutely normal.

Great voodoo this Reiki, John!

Leslie’s Story

Example of Reiki for emergency use, promoting self  healing, prevention.

Leslie is the 13 year old daughter of my daughter’s baby-sitter  and sometime housekeeper, Ana. Ana arrived to clean house one day in December  1995 after a particularly hard and deep snow In Virginia had kept school kids  home for over a week. The kids had returned to school on a Monday and this was  now Wednesday, and as Ana walked in I could tell something terrible had  happened. She blurted out in broken English a story that made me pile her into  my car immediately, and head for her house where Leslie was recuperating. Leslie  had fallen on the ice at school and knocked out her front teeth She had been  taken to the local emergency room where after waiting over two hours to see a  doctor, was told by the attending medical doctor she would have to go to an oral  surgeon located not at the hospital but in a private practice ten miles distant.  Finally, however, she received an examination and x-rags, only to discover the  teeth had not been knocked out as originally thought, but had been jammed into  the maxillary sinuses of her upper face. He needed to operate to retrieve them  and put them back into place. He recovered the teeth and wired them into place  and sent her home with tylenol #3 (codeine) for pain relief.

This was now the next day. She had slept fitfully even with the  pain killer; her face was extremely swollen, not to mention she was having a  difficult time drinking. No eating at all. I explained briefly to Leslie that I  wanted to do a hands on treatment called Reiki that would at least make her feel  better, and that if she was interested, I would teach her how to do self  treatments. She was keen. After a one hour treatment she looked brighter and was  eager to learn to do it herself. I explained briefly the initiation process, (as  a Level 3A, I performed one attunement which allowed the Reiki to flow through  the hands), performed the initiation, and taught her the self treatment  positions and process.

I checked on Leslie the next day to see how she was doing with her  recovery. She had not used any pain medicine since receiving the Reiki, because  she had no more pain. She was keeping her hands on herself constantly because it  made her feel good, and was requiring everyone in her family to leave her alone  one hour a day so she could do her self treatment in quiet.

In the next few weeks Leslie continued to make rapid recovery. She  never used pain medicine again. Her dental surgeon was very happy with the  tissue healing. She experienced no infections. After 6 months, one tooth was  completely reconnected, healed and living. The verdict is still pending on the  second tooth.

A Reiki testimonial:
What in the name of Heaven is Reiki?
by Gordon R. Yeates, U.K.

I didn’t ask what Reiki is when you spoke of it a few days ago, I  felt that perhaps you would expect me to know. Is it some kind of massage  treatment?  I have known you both for a very long time, and I distinctly  remember you both having to use walking sticks to get about, and then with some  difficulty. My goodness, look at both of you now!

I still marvel at the new start in life that Reiki has given both  of us, and I have to confess, that I do still find it hard to totally understand  it. If I were to be honest, we have more or less separated looking back into  two parts - BR and AR. BR...(before Reiki), we knew only the clinical  expectations in relation to each of us having arthritis and the prognosis is not  good. AR...(after Reiki), is something else. We have a new start, and our future  is open-ended, we have improved to the extent that the walking sticks are no  longer a necessity, we feel that the future holds for us even greater  improvement, and we have a new optimism and scope to enjoy ourselves, and at one  and the same time, we are able to help and encourage others. So, how did it all  happen?
Toward the end of 1992, our daughter Beverley, and her husband  Andrew, invited us to go to stay with them in Hong Kong. Andrew is a civil  engineer in the area of Kowloon, and they live in a very nice flat, about half  way up Victoria Peak, on Hong Kong Island. At that time, both Barbara and  myself, were pretty “crook”, as they say in Australia. In fact, I would say that  the 9th October 1992, saw us at almost our worst. It seemed to me that it was  questionable whether we should be going to Hong Kong at all. Barbara, on two  sticks, or otherwise, is a very determined woman. The next day we embarked on a  747 at Heathrow...with the expectant mothers, their children, and the  infirm.

Note Look up the word Reiki in any dictionary, and as far as I  know, you will find no reference to the word. Having said all of that, there are  an ever growing number of Reiki practitioners in the UK but still the number is  few, by comparison with certain other countries.

What is meant by the word Reiki? Well, it divides into two  parts, Reiki...inner spark, and Ki, Chi, or Qi, meaning energy. I am told that  the word Reiki, comes to us from Japan, though Reiki may well have origins  elsewhere. Now what are the relationships between the comments from friends in  the first paragraph, Reiki, my wife, and myself?

As stated earlier, we are both arthritic. Barbara has rheumatoid  and osteo arthritis, and I have osteo arthritis affecting my spine especially. I  was retired from working for the M.O.D. in 1988 on health grounds. Subsequent  medical boards, classified me as unemployable. My neck and lumbar area, are  particularly affected. At that time I spent days in my bed, with back spasms and  excruciating pain. Barbara has mobility problems more directly related to her  knees. At that time she could go nowhere without a walking stick. Half an hour  at the shops, sometimes meant returning to bed for the remainder of the day, at  best she could little more than sit in a chair. The day before leaving for Hong  Kong, I had to get two sticks for her to get back to the car. To say that I had  misgivings about going to Hong Kong, was really to understate the case.

This holiday was a once in a lifetime experience, and quite  naturally we soon overdid the sight seeing. As time went on, we came to be  struggling more and more with the pain. This limited both the places we could go  to, and the time that we could spend on our feet.

Incidental to this situation, one evening Beverley received an  invitation from an English friend, who is a Doctor of Chinese medicine, to  attend a public lecture that was being given locally, by an Australian called  Dr. John Veltheim. He was said to be introducing a method of treating patients,  called Reiki. Beverley is a trained nurse, and has two very useful attributes;  one is a thirst for knowledge, and the other a very open mind. After attending  this lecture, she returned home with a wealth of wonderful anecdotes of amazing  happenings in connection with the use of Reiki. When Andrew heard of the  account, he soon joined us in our skepticism. I actually scoffed at what I  heard, and saw all such things as improbabilities. You see, money was now to be  paid out for Beverley to attend a seminar. The subject was Reiki 1st degree.  Beverley did take the seminar and obtained Reiki first degree. I thought, Oh  forget it!

A day or two later, we arrived back at the flat, crippled with  pain. Beverley asked me to be her first patient. More in hope than expectation,  I stretched out on the bed. She placed hands in turn, in twelve positions, over  my clothes. I was in a state of submission. She started by placing her hands  upon my head, and to my surprise, in a few minutes I was aware of a lowering of  my pain level. Five minutes or so later, my pain had ceased,. I said nothing to  her....remember I am a skeptic! After one hour Beverley announced that she had  finished the treatment. I thanked her, and she left the room. I was alone, and I  was apparently pain free. I got up and bent down very cautiously. I then knelt,  and nothing changed. I found myself leaping on the spot. To my surprise, and  certainly to the surprise of those present....I leapt into the sitting room, at  the same time kicking my heels in the air. Poor Gordon he has gone mad! It was  a number of years since I was last without pain. Good days had just a lower pain  level, never totally pain free. The situation was unbelievable, - so, this is  REIKI!

During the next three days I had no pain. Then like a bad penny,  the pain returned. I was very disappointed, yet the pain, whilst chronic, seemed  inexplicably different. Beverley continued with my one hour sessions daily, and  in three days it had gone again. I began to think in a much more optimistic way.

Beverley also treated Barbara with Reiki, and she had quite a  different experience. After having the first session of Reiki, it was obvious to  her that there was no reduction in the pain level. Barbara was disappointed in  view of the way that Reiki had helped me. Though Barbara felt that her treatment  was a waste of Beverley’s time, Beverley persisted with the treatment. After  about one week, Barbara realized, indeed we all did, that she was now moving  more easily. The pain was ever present, but little by little the joints seemed  to unlock. As the joints gained more freedom of movement, the pain began to  lessen. Barbara seemed to fill with enthusiasm for her treatment, and above all,  for Reiki.

It is my practice to keep a diary, so that I am sure of what I  say, in terms of dates, etc. Six days after Barbara had received her first  treatment, and the sessions were maintained daily, I asked Barbara what she  would like to do that day. She said that she wished to go to the top of Victoria  Peak. We went by Peak tram to the farthest point that it is possible to ride, we  alighted from the tram, and she said she wished to reach the summit, in fact the  radar tower. The road leading to the top, is very steep indeed, and after  struggling ever upward for about fifteen minutes, I now saw that Barbara was  walking, without support from the walking stick. In fact she was holding the  stick across her body with a hand at each end. She saw my look of concern, and  smiled. All things in life are possible.
Some days later, when we returned to  the flat, Andrew told me that he would like me to attend the next Reiki seminar  to be given by Dr. John Veltheim. It was to be on the 28th and 29th November,  1992 at the Hong Kong Hilton. He stated that it would be a Christmas present to  both of us, and it would allow me to continue treatment for us both, upon our  return to England. What a very nice thing to have happen to us, what a kind  thought!

I attended the Reiki seminar at the Hilton, along with Andrew. The  class was comprised of thirty-five people from several different countries, and  the people came from as many different walks of life. We were intrigued,  fascinated, and extremely questioning. When the second morning came, none were  late for class, and we listened attentively. It was noticeable that those of us  from western cultures often had to wrench at the parameters of our  understanding, whereas those from China, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand,  appeared to have less difficulty with new concepts.

During the following year back in England, I continued to treat  both of us daily, and in February ˜93 Barbara gave up using a walking stick. She now walks normally. The blood analysis, which was monitored on a regular basis,  continued to show ever improving results. The specialist in the hospital  rheumatology department said that he was very pleased, though in spite of being  told about Reiki, he put down the improvement to the drugs that he had  prescribed. Then, in the middle of June 1993, Barbara announced to me that she  had taken NO drugs at all since the previous November. I was shocked! I knew  never ever stop medication when it is ordered by a doctor! Reiki is  complimentary to all medication. Barbara was a trained nurse, and had decided to  run this private test on her own initiative. The results are encouraging but not  entirely conclusive, for no properly controlled research was undertaken, or  indeed desired.

Periodically, Barbara had to have blood tests made at the local  hospital, and was in the care of the Rheumatology Department as an outpatient.  Through 1993 she continued to improve, and such tests supported that fact.  Finally, in September 1993, Barbara was told by the consultant, that she was in  full remission, and that there was no reason to make a further appointment  unless she was aware of anything else materializing. Barbara was thrilled. When  she asked the doctor about the osteo arthritis; and it should be known that the  agreement was to remove the patella if she wished, only the previous year  because Barbara’s legs kept giving way, and causing her to fall. She also  suffered severe pain on that account. The doctor replied that she could not  account for that improvement at all.  For the record, Barbara has continued to  walk normally without a walking stick ever since, occasionally she has some  pain, for we often go hill walking, but we can now control such pain, and  prevent it from restricting that which we wish to do.

In respect of my own situation, I have far less pain and I do not  wear a corset or collar, which I always had to have before. I don’t have  sleeping tablets, and I have no longer a need to take medication to ease the  pain. We do not claim to have been cured of this dreadful disease, but together  we have a new start, where it affects us far less, and above all else a new  optimism for continued improvement.

Update In April 1993 Barbara and our eldest daughter Dana, were  both attuned to Reiki 1. In July 1993 both Beverley and Andres were attuned to  Reiki 2 in Hong Kong. Barbara also became attuned to Reiki 2 in September 1993  in Wisbech, England. Gordon and Barbara are currently Reiki Master trainees!
